Motor vehicle recalls have been increasing

Motorists in Oklahoma may benefit from understanding more about the recent spike in the number of recalls affecting auto dealerships in the United States. During 2014, there were almost 64 million vehicles recalled by federal authorities. The National Highway Traffic Safety Association imposed a civil penalty totaling $105 million against Fiat Chrysler, the largest fine ever levied by the agency. According to the NHTSA, Fiat Chrysler manufactured over 500,000 vehicles equipped with faulty suspension components.

The defective part caused motorists to lose control of their vehicles while driving. The owners affected by the subpar parts will have the opportunity to sell their vehicles back to the manufacturer. Fiat Chrysler was penalized for violating statues regarding notification requirements for the NHTSA, notification requirements for dealers and owners and governing effective and timely recall remedies. The NHTSA also claims that over 1 million Jeeps manufactured by the auto company are susceptible to igniting into flames.

General Motors was also one of the manufacturers required to recall a massive number of vehicles. More recently Honda and Toyota were required to comply with a massive recall due to air bags that were potentially defective. Dealerships have hired thousands of technicians to help prepare for the extensive amount of repairs needed for owners affected by the recalls.

People who have suffered injuries as a result of defective auto parts may benefit from contacting a lawyer who has experience in product liability litigation. Legal counsel may be able to investigate the incident and help determine which parties can be held responsible for the defective products and the ensuing damages. Plaintiffs may be entitled to restitution that helps compensate for repair expenses, medical costs and other losses resulting from the incident.
