Sharing the road safely with teens in Oklahoma

In 2013, there were 371,645 people injured and 2,927 people killed in accidents involving teen drivers. The highest number of injuries and deaths occur during the 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day, which have been dubbed the 100 Deadliest Days. A report from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that two-thirds of those injuries and deaths were people other than the teen driver who caused the crash.

While teen drivers do pose a risk when they are on the road, accidents involving teen drivers have decreased over the past 20 years, according to AAA. Crashes involving injuries are down 51 percent while crashes involving deaths have decreased by 56 percent. This may partially be the result of graduated licensing programs as well as improvements to driver education programs.

However, motor vehicle accidents are the most common cause of death among drivers who are between the age range of 15 and 19. Parents of teen drivers may make use of online resources provided by AAA. The SmartStart program can help parents determine when their teen may be able to drive a car or how much driving time they can have. It may also help parents coach their teens while they are in a car together and help them learn safer driving habits.

Those who are involved in a car accident may suffer serious injuries such as broken bones or a traumatic brain injury. In some cases, it may be possible to obtain compensation for those injuries. Restitution may help pay for medical bills or recoup lost earnings. Cases may be settled outside of court or through a formal trial, and accident victims may wish to talk with an attorney to determine how to go about obtaining compensation.
