Truck brake problems present safety hazards

Driving in Oklahoma can be an exercise in trust. Motorists and passengers expect that other vehicle operators are committed to safe driving and making sure their vehicles are roadworthy. When a driver is careless about vehicle maintenance, others who are on the road are in danger.

In September 2016, over 18,000 commercial vehicle break inspections took place during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's Brake Safety Week. Nearly 4000 vehicles were taken off the road due to brake problems. The fact that there were thousands of trucks on the road with poorly functioning brakes should be a wake-up call to drivers, cyclists and pedestrians about the possible risks of being on the road. The drivers of any of these trucks may have been involved in a situation where they could not stop in time to avoid an accident.

Truck accidents can pose a particular risk, given the size and power of these vehicles. Individuals who are injured in such accidents risk severe injury, disability, disfigurement and even death. As a result, the injured party or his or her family may suffer significant losses including loss of being unable to do one's job and to earn a sufficient living. In addition, accident survivors may experience long-term issues with pain that are not always easy to manage.

Although many semi truck accidents are caused by truck drivers who are speeding, impaired, drowsy, distracted or negligent in some other manner, others are caused by improper truck maintenance. An attorney representing an injured victim could name the trucking company as a defendant in a personal injury lawsuit when the accident was the result of brakes that had not been serviced in a timely manner.
